Software-Defined Data Plane Enhancing SDN and NFV
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we posit that extension of SDN to support deeply and flexibly programmable, software-defined data plane significantly enhance SDN and NFV and their interaction in terms of (1) enhanced interaction between applications and networks, (2) optimization of network functions, and (3) rapid development of new network protocols. All of these benefits are expected to contribute to improving the quality of diversifying communication networks and services. We identify three major technical challenges for enabling software-defined data plane as (1) ease of programming, (2) reasonable and predictable performance and (3) isolation among multiple concurrent logics. We also promote applicationdriving thinking towards defining software defined data-plane. We briefly introduce our project FLARE and its related technologies and review four use cases of flexible and deeply programmable data plane. key words: Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV), network virtualization

SDN AND ITS USE-CASES- NV AND NFV A State-of-the-Art Survey
Three concepts (a) network programmability by clear separation of data and control planes and (b) sharing of network infrastructure to provide multitenancy, including traffic and address isolation, in large data center networks and (c) replacing the functions that traditionally run on a specialized hardware, with the software-realizations that run on commodity servers have gained lot of attenti...

The state-of-the-art OpenFlow technology only partially realized SDN vision of abstraction and centralization for packet forwarding in switches. OpenFlow/P4 falls short in implementing middlebox functionalities due to the fundamental limitation in its match-action abstraction. In this paper, we advocate the vision of Software-Defined Middleboxes (SDM) to realize abstraction and centralization f...
متن کاملWireless software-defined networks (W-SDNs) and network function virtualization (NFV) for 5G cellular systems: An overview and qualitative evaluation
Cellular network technologies have evolved to support the ever-increasing wireless data traffic, which results from the rapidly-evolving Internet and widely-adopted cloud applications over wireless networks. However, hardware-based designs, which rely on closed and inflexible architectures of current cellular systems, make a typical 10-year cycle for a new generation of wireless networks to be ...

Today’s mobile customers desire to remain connected anywhere, at any-time and using any device. This phenomenon has encouraged the mobile network operators to build complex network architectures by incorporating new features and extensions, which are harder to manage and operate. In this paper, we propose a novel and simplified architecture for mobile networks. The proposed architecture, which ...
متن کاملCost Analysis of SDN/NFV Architecture over 4G Infrastructure
Two complementary architectures, software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are emerging to comprehensively address several networking issues. In this work, we introduce the most embraced virtualization concepts proposed by SDN and NFV architectures. We quantitatively evaluate hardware and energy cost savings with these two SDN and NFV architectures compared to ...
